The worst thing?

The absolute worst?

That we exist, and continue to thrive.

If you are one of the few that live and appreciate the benefits, singapore is wonderful, and must be carefully cultivated for the next generation.

If you are our neighbor, we are perennial ogres in caricature, the inconvenient foil for votes. No amount of success can trump “they'll drown in our spit” put downs. Boy, does it scratch the nationalism itch.

If you are the west, we are an eyesore because we are confident about the path we are taking, which is decidedly non-western, despite English being our working language. We don't measure ourselves against western standards of governance and society.

If you are the third world, we are brought up as palatable inspiration. If Singapore can do it, anybody can. Unfortunately, the same criticisms of Singapore will be magnified in any place less prosperous. Singapore hasn't been emulated, and probably won't.

Singapore is an artificial division by treaty. It shouldn't exist, much less thrive.

Making others look bad is the worst thing about Singapore.
