If you express sympathy with US government policy to China, you will likely be investigated and tracked by the Chinese security services.

China practices a system called “people’s war” 人民战争 which does not exist in the US or Taiwan. The Chinese government encourages its citizens to report any suspicious speech or behavior to the local police, who will then pass on the information to the Ministry of Public Security (roughly equivalent to the FBI in the US).

The MPS will then go and question your friends and contacts about what you have said.

Soon, you will find that your friends and contacts are not your friends and contacts anymore.

Because this concept of people’s war is embraced by all Chinese, it is almost impossible for foreign intelligence services to penetrate Chinese society even though China has such a huge population. The front line of the Chinese government you are dealing with may be the next person you talk to in a bar. Just assume that if you say to someone in a bar that Taiwan is right to want independence, the local police will have that information in a few hours, and then the MPS.

Once the authorities have your identity, then it is easy to track your identity online across social media, and where you are and who you meet with facial recognition.

The MPS will not arrest you because they want to see who you meet with.

Liking American brands, Hollywood movies, fashions and lifestyle are different things, and no one cares what you say and think about that.
