Before concentrating the Uygur population China was killing off its own people in the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. The Communists finally figured out that this was not the best way to develop a country, so they standardized things.

Uygurs didn’t follow the standard Han model, so some genius in the huge Chinese bureaucracy decided that they needed ‘re-education’ in ‘re-education’ camps.

Uygyrs who made it out have reported on it. They also report that the Chinese security officers will often call, telling them to return home and everything will be forgiven, -or- their family will suffer even more than they are now.

I don’t know how many have escaped. China isn’t talking about it, nor have I seen reports on the issue from places the Uygurs are hiding.

So your supposition makes sense until you take into account that you don’t really know how many have escaped. The government knows, but they aren’t talking. Your research has only found what it hasn’t found, so you stopped looking and announced that the problem really doesn’t exist. The CPC thanks you.
